Kyle Gibson Pitching For The Orioles

BALTIMORE, Md. — Kyle Gibson is set to make his season debut for the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday against the New York Yankees. This announcement follows the team’s roster changes made on April 29.

The Orioles optioned Kade Strowd to make room for Gibson, who was recalled from High-A Aberdeen. Gibson, a veteran right-hander, joined the Orioles in late March on a one-year contract worth $5.25 million.

Before his recall, Gibson had worked through three starts in the minor leagues, allowing six runs (five earned) while recording 13 strikeouts against just two walks over 12 innings. In his last outing with Aberdeen on April 20, he pitched five innings and threw 78 pitches, meaning he is expected to handle around 90 pitches against the Yankees.

The 37-year-old Gibson previously played with the Orioles two seasons ago, logging 192 innings with a 4.73 ERA. Last season, he was with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he posted a 4.24 ERA across 169 2/3 innings. His presence will join fellow starters in Brandon Hyde‘s rotation, which is currently facing some challenges due to injuries.

In recent weeks, the Orioles lost starter Grayson Rodriguez to a mild lat strain, and other pitchers on the roster are also dealing with injuries. These challenges have necessitated Gibson’s return to the big leagues.

Gibson is expected to bolster the Orioles’ pitching staff as they strive for a crucial victory against their divisional rivals.
