Kyrie Irving Out with Back Injury as Mavericks Face Trail Blazers
The Dallas Mavericks will be without star guard Kyrie Irving for their upcoming game against the Portland Trail Blazers due to a lumbar back sprain, sources confirmed. Irving, who has been a key player for the Mavericks this season, is expected to miss at least one to two weeks as he undergoes treatment.
Irving’s absence adds to the Mavericks’ growing list of injuries, with fellow star Luka Dončić also sidelined due to a strained left calf. Dončić, who has been using a scooter for mobility, is expected to be reevaluated later this month. The Mavericks have struggled in recent games, losing five consecutive matchups, including Monday night’s defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Trail Blazers, coming off a win against the New Orleans Pelicans, see an opportunity to capitalize on the Mavericks’ depleted roster. However, Portland will also be shorthanded, with veteran forward Jerami Grant ruled out due to injury and center Robert Williams III listed as questionable with an ankle issue.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd acknowledged the challenges his team faces but remains optimistic. “We have a deep roster, and our guys are ready to step up,” Kidd said. “It’s a tough stretch, but we’ve been here before.”
Irving, 32, has been performing at an All-Star level this season, averaging 24.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. His absence leaves a significant void in the Mavericks’ offense, which has already been struggling without Dončić.
The Trail Blazers, currently 13-23 and sitting in 13th place in the Western Conference, are looking to build momentum. Head coach Chauncey Billups praised Williams III’s recent performance, saying, “He’s a difference maker. His instincts and IQ are at a high level.”
With both teams dealing with key injuries, the game promises to be a test of depth and resilience. The Mavericks, last season’s Western Conference champions, will aim to snap their losing streak, while the Trail Blazers seek to climb the standings with a crucial win.
