Kyrie Irving Interview, Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic

Los Angeles, CA – Kyrie Irving, a nine-time All-Star and guard for the Dallas Mavericks, urged fans and analysts to cease their criticisms following the blockbuster trade of fellow Maverick Luka Doncic. Speaking in an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, Irving expressed concern over the backlash against Doncic after Dallas dealt the All-NBA player immediately after the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season.

The Mavericks traded Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for an aging Anthony Davis, a draft pick, and rising star Max Christie. This move drew considerable backlash, especially since Doncic had led the Mavericks to significant playoff success over the past few years, including an NBA Finals appearance last season with Irving.

Irving articulated that discussions about Doncic’s fitness, chemistry, and long-term potential have overshadowed the player’s accomplishments. “We have built real relationships that will transcend just the basketball court,” Irving said. “I know that for my own peace of mind, just because we not only had two years together, but we got a chance to know each other as men.”

Questions regarding Doncic’s capabilities followed the news of the trade, as various Dallas insiders raised issues about his dedication and fitness. However, Irving wanted to emphasize that such personal attacks are unnecessary and only serve to distract from Doncic’s on-court excellence.

Irving’s comments came after the Mavericks’ front office reportedly hesitated to extend a five-year, $345 million supermax contract to Doncic. The organization is at a pivotal moment, facing scrutiny for its choices, which include moving one of the top players in the league in exchange for fewer assets than expected.

“Hopefully, we can tailor back on some of the public criticism aspects of it and really just maintain the kindness and the compassion that we have for each other that’s real every day,” Irving added, acknowledging his own history of public scrutiny throughout his career.

The trade’s impact is immediately felt as the Lakers prepare for a crucial matchup against the Denver Nuggets, where Doncic is expected to play, having recovered from a prior injury. In his early stint with the Lakers, Doncic has averaged 14.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists over three games, underwhelming by his standards.

Meanwhile, Davis, who was traded for Doncic, is currently out with an adductor strain, further complicating the Mavericks’ decision to move Doncic, who had previously elevated the team’s performance significantly.

The upcoming game against the Nuggets may serve as an opportunity for Doncic to flourish and silence critics. Historically, he has performed well against Denver, averaging 27.1 points per game in their previous matchups. The Lakers, currently 21-12 in conference games, will be seeking their 15th road victory and hope to snap the Nuggets’ nine-game winning streak.
