Brownwood Lady Lions Softball Victory

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Brownwood Lady Lions staged a thrilling comeback Tuesday night, scoring five runs in the final inning to defeat the Stephenville Honeybees 5-1 in their District 6-4A softball matchup. With this victory, the Lady Lions improved their record to 12-7 overall and 2-1 in district play.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh, the Lady Lions ignited their offense with a single from Tynlea Wilson. Jakayla Peek and Peyton Pena followed with walks, loading the bases with one out. Carlee Burks then delivered a pivotal bases-clearing double on a 3-2 count, scoring Wilson’s courtesy runner, Maitlyn Esquivel, as well as Peek and Pena to give Brownwood a 3-1 lead.

Chloe Walls capped the rally with a two-run home run, extending the lead to 5-1. “We just didn’t give up,” Burks said after the game. “We knew we had to fight until the last out. It was a team effort, and that’s what we needed.”

Kaydence Allen pitched a complete game for Brownwood, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out ten batters while walking three. With this performance, she surpassed the 100-strikeout mark for the season. “I felt good out there today,” Allen said. “My teammates really helped me by putting runs on the board.”

The Lady Lions recorded seven hits in total, with Burks and Walls each contributing two hits, and singles from Allen, Wilson, and Jeniffer Romero. Brownwood will return to the field at 6:30 p.m. Friday for a home game against Graham, who currently holds a record of 6-12, 1-2.

In other district softball action, Mineral Wells earned a convincing 12-4 victory over Glen Rose. The team improved its district record to 2-1.

Meanwhile, the Brownwood Lions, who are defending District 6-4A champions, struggled in their baseball opener against the Stephenville Yellow Jackets, suffering a 6-4 defeat. The Lions fell behind early, allowing four runs in the first inning and two in the fifth.

Despite scoring three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh innings, the Lions could not complete the comeback. Brownwood finished the game with eight hits, yet committed four errors which proved costly. Stephenville, on the other hand, collected only four hits but drew three walks while the Lions had just one. “We have to clean up our defense,” Lions coach stated. “Errors like that can’t happen if we want to be competitive.”

The two teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Friday at Morris Southall Field for the conclusion of their two-game district series. In other baseball action, Brock bested Graham 4-2, and Mineral Wells shut out Glen Rose 3-0.
