KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell spoke with reporters Tuesday, just two days ahead of Tennessee‘s highly anticipated game against Auburn, scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern at Thompson-Boling Arena. The matchup, part of the SEC schedule, will be livestreamed on SECN+.

As the No. 16 ranked Lady Vols (16-6, 4-6 SEC) prepare for a crossroad game against the struggling Tigers (12-12, 3-8 SEC), Caldwell emphasized the importance of consistent performance. “We have to take care of business, and so we still have to have a sense of urgency,” Caldwell said. “We talk about at length about being a top 10 team in the country, and you can do that by beating Connecticut and LSU or by winning the remainder of the games on your schedule.”

Following a recent loss to LSU, Caldwell highlighted the need to return to their roots and improve their game strategy. She noted the necessity of enhancing shot selection after varying performance in recent outings. “I think we have done a better job with our shot selection. We could get back to shooting some more threes… just making sure we define shot selection a little bit more,” she added.

The Lady Vols had taken just 18 three-point attempts against LSU, significantly lower than their season average of 30 attempts per game. Caldwell stressed the importance of increased offensive production in upcoming games, especially as Auburn is known for turning the ball over; the Tigers average 18 turnovers per game on the road.

In anticipation of the game against Auburn, Caldwell expressed her team’s need to build on their previous performances. “We’ve got to get back to your roots. You’ve got to treat every game the same, but we still have to get better,” she remarked. “We’ve had games where we looked like we’re supposed to look, and then there are those that look like our practice.”

When asked about the challenge posed by Auburn, Caldwell specifically pointed to player DeYona Gaston, saying, “Gaston is going to be tough for us. She has good size. She can score any way at the rim. We’re going to have to throw multiple people at her, because she’s tough.”

Moreover, Caldwell addressed the need for improved energy and focus throughout the game. “It’s crucial for our success to maintain the correct level of focus and urgency,” she said.

The larger context for Tennessee’s upcoming games is critical, with NCAA tournament seeding on the line. The Lady Vols have an opportunity to solidify their standing with four of their final six games at home. Caldwell is hopeful this home advantage will help the team regain momentum.

As excitement builds among players and fans alike, the Lady Vols are eager to build on their recent successes and establish a strong finish to the regular season. They aim for a decisive victory against Auburn to set the tone for their remaining games.
