Los Angeles Lakers Vs Houston Rockets April 2025

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers have officially clinched a playoff spot after defeating the Dallas Mavericks 112-97 on April 9, marking their first postseason berth without entering the play-in tournament since 2020. Coach JJ Redick emphasized that while the milestone is significant, the team is now setting its sights on securing the No. 3 seed.

With the win over the Mavericks, the Lakers not only avoided the play-in game but also ensured some much-needed rest before the playoffs begin. Redick, in his first season as head coach, reflected on the accomplishment, stating, “It’s big time that we clinched a playoff spot. But obviously, we want the third seed and we’re going to go after it, for sure.”

Luka Dončić, who joined the Lakers in a midseason trade, echoed Redick’s sentiments. “It’s big time. You don’t want to play in the play-in. You get some rest,” Dončić said, underscoring the importance of avoiding a single-elimination game that could jeopardize their postseason run.

The Lakers have faced challenges this season, having participated in the play-in game in 2021, 2023, and 2024, but they advanced each time. However, entering the playoffs directly this year allows them to prepare better for the upcoming series, which starts after the regular season concludes on April 13.

Heading into their final home game of the regular season against the Houston Rockets on April 11, the Lakers are not only looking to secure their playoff positioning but also to rest their key players. The Rockets, having already clinched the second seed, are likely to bench some starters, creating a prime opportunity for the Lakers to solidify their standing.

“This is a more important game for Los Angeles since Houston has already locked the second seed,” stated Redick, referring to the need for a win to potentially secure the coveted third seed, which would enhance their playoff advantage. The Lakers control their destiny with two remaining games.

The trio of LeBron James, Dončić, and Austin Reaves has shown promising chemistry, especially after a successful recent road trip. The upcoming game against Houston presents another chance for the team to fine-tune their performance before the postseason kickoff.

Redick’s squad will be looking to not just secure a playoff position but also to establish momentum and an identity that will carry them through the intense playoff competition. As they prepare for what they hope will be a deep playoff run, the Lakers remain focused on their ultimate goal of championship contention.
