Los Angeles Lakers Michael Porter Jr. Trade Speculation

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Lakers are exploring a significant roster change, potentially trading Austin Reaves in an effort to acquire Michael Porter Jr. from the Denver Nuggets. The move aims to bolster the Lakers’ three-point shooting as they strive for a deep postseason run, but the deal may face challenges due to Denver’s reluctance to part ways with Porter.

Since acquiring Luka Doncic in a high-profile trade on February 2, the Lakers have demonstrated periods of excellence but have recently faltered, losing their last three games. Despite these setbacks, they remain competitive for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. A significant concern for the team has been its three-point shooting, with the Lakers currently shooting just 35.7% from long range under head coach JJ Redick.

This dire need for shooting has fueled speculation about targeting Porter, a standout three-point specialist. After signing a lucrative $179 million contract with the Nuggets, Porter has established himself as one of the NBA’s premier long-range shooters. He recorded a remarkable 42.2% shooting percentage from three-point range as a rookie and has consistently maintained a high efficiency, making at least 39.7% of his attempts in four of his last five seasons.

Currently, the 2023 NBA champion is averaging 18.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, with shooting percentages of 50.6% from the field and 39.9% from beyond the arc. His exceptional ability to move without the ball and his quick release make him an excellent fit for a Lakers squad in search of reliable perimeter shooting.

While Reaves has contributed to the team’s efforts, analysts suggest that his skill set might not address the Lakers’ most urgent needs effectively. Nonetheless, acquiring Porter could prove to be a complex task. The Nuggets have repeatedly emphasized their intention to retain Porter, particularly in light of his pivotal role during their championship journey. “Denver was adamant about retaining Porter amid NBA trade rumors this season,” stated a league insider, indicating that any trade might only be considered if his performance were to decline.

As the playoffs approach, the Lakers are anticipated to closely monitor Porter’s situation. Should the Nuggets’ stance change, Los Angeles could mount a serious effort to acquire the sharpshooting forward, potentially transforming their roster ahead of a crucial postseason.
