Lakers Eye Hornets’ Nick Richards to Bolster Frontcourt Depth

The Los Angeles Lakers are actively exploring trade options to strengthen their roster as they pursue an 18th NBA championship. With just over four weeks until the trade deadline, the team is focusing on improving their interior depth, particularly at the center position. One name that has emerged as a potential target is Charlotte Hornets center Nick Richards.

Richards, 27, has become a standout performer for the Hornets, averaging 9.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game this season. Despite his contributions, he has been overshadowed by the emergence of 23-year-old Mark Williams, making him a potential trade candidate. The Lakers, who rank 26th in the NBA in second-chance points allowed per game, see Richards as a solution to their defensive and rebounding woes.

Richards’ defensive impact is notable, as opponents shoot 6.7% worse within six feet of the basket when he is the primary defender. His presence could also alleviate some of the pressure on Anthony Davis, who has publicly requested more support in the frontcourt. Richards’ contract, which pays him $5 million annually through 2025-26, makes him an affordable and low-risk acquisition for the Lakers.

However, the Lakers are not alone in their pursuit of Richards. According to Evan Sidery of Forbes, the New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, and Sacramento Kings have also expressed interest in the Hornets’ big man. The Knicks, in particular, are seeking to address their depth issues after recent struggles, including a 23-15 rebounding deficit against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Richards’ journey to the NBA has been marked by steady growth. A native of Jamaica, he played high school basketball in New York and New Jersey before starring at the University of Kentucky. His breakout season in 2022-23, where he averaged 9.7 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting over 69% from the field, earned him praise from teammates like PJ Washington, who called his development “amazing.”

For the Lakers, acquiring Richards could be a strategic move to address their weaknesses without sacrificing future assets. A potential trade package involving Jalen Hood-Schifino and a minimum-salary player could be enough to secure his services. While Richards may not be a marquee name, his skill set aligns perfectly with the Lakers’ needs, making him a valuable target as the trade deadline approaches.
