Lakers Eye Trade for RJ Barrett Amid Winning Streak

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly considering a significant move this summer, potentially trading rookie forward Dalton Knecht to acquire RJ Barrett from the Toronto Raptors. This speculation arises as the Lakers ride a seven-game winning streak, lifting their record to 39-21 and securing the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

Luka Dončić, acquired by the Lakers on Feb. 2, has been instrumental in this success, forming a dynamic partnership with four-time NBA champion LeBron James. Together, they have elevated Los Angeles’ offense to a No. 12 ranking, with a 117.3 offensive rating over the past seven games. However, the team’s remarkable turnaround can also be attributed to a league-leading 106.2 defensive rating during the same span.

Sources indicate that general manager Rob Pelinka may be motivated to strengthen the roster further ahead of the 2025-26 championship season by offering Knecht, alongside players like Gabe Vincent and Jarred Vanderbilt, along with draft picks, in exchange for Barrett. “Knecht would be a great addition for Toronto,” said Heavy Sports’ David Grubb on Monday. “His three-point shooting addresses a key need, and his ability to play multiple positions offers flexibility.”

Barrett, who joined the Raptors this season after being traded by the New York Knicks, is enjoying a breakout year. In 49 games, he is averaging 21.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.7 assists on a 53.1% effective field goal percentage. His offensive skills and versatility make him an attractive target for the Lakers, who believe he could thrive alongside Dončić and James. “If he improves defensively and becomes more consistent on offense, he could become a solid contributor for a championship contender,” Grubb added.
