Lakers Eye Trade Market for Center Despite Small-Ball Shift

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers, currently teetering on the playoff line, are reportedly exploring the trade market for a center despite their recent shift toward small-ball lineups. The team, which acquired forward Dorian Finney-Smith last month, has seen mixed results with its current roster of big men, prompting speculation about potential moves ahead of the trade deadline.

According to a recent report by Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, the Lakers are actively scouting for centers to bolster their frontcourt. Woike, citing conversations with a league executive, explained that teams typically identify specific player traits before pursuing trade targets. “The Lakers’ primary trade target was Dorian Finney-Smith because they aggressively pursued him and probably gave up slightly more to get him a month before the trade deadline,” Woike wrote. “They’re certainly looking at depth options at center.”

Head coach JJ Redick echoed this sentiment during a practice session on Thursday, further fueling speculation about the team’s plans. The Lakers have struggled with consistency at the center position this season. Jaxson Hayes, who showed promise in the latter half of last season, has underperformed and dealt with injuries. Christian Wood, another option, has yet to play a game this season due to injury.

As a result, the Lakers have relied on two-way players like Christian Koloko and Armel Traore. Koloko, who became available this summer and was cleared early in the season, has provided an unexpected boost. However, the team still views the center position as a clear area for improvement.

Woike noted that the Lakers value toughness, athleticism, and versatility in potential trade targets. Ballhandling is also expected to be a priority. “A lot of the ‘targets’ won’t totally shake out for another few weeks or so as the trade market gets clearer,” he added.

The Lakers’ frontcourt struggles highlight the challenges of balancing small-ball lineups with traditional center play. Whether the team opts for a full-time center or a hybrid approach, shoring up the position will be critical for their playoff aspirations.
