Lakers Timberwolves Nba Playoffs April 2025

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers are in a precarious position, staring down a 3-1 series deficit against the Minnesota Timberwolves. With their playoff hopes on the line, the team is relying heavily on their star duo, LeBron James and Luka Dončić, to reverse their fortunes in Game 5.

LeBron James, now 40, has played well throughout the series, averaging 26.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. Despite his age, he remains a formidable force on the court. James has taken on additional playmaking responsibilities, which gives Dončić more freedom to play off the ball. However, their fourth-quarter performances have been troubling, with a combined shooting percentage of just 32.4% in the final periods of games.

“I’ve seen Bron do it already,” said Lakers swingman Dorian Finney-Smith, emphasizing the duo’s potential for a comeback. “They’ll need to start with cleaner fourth quarters.” The Lakers have been outscored 105-69 in the fourth quarter across the series, raising concerns about the stamina of both James and Dončić.

Meanwhile, Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has been pivotal, leading the series with an average of 29.8 points per game and playing staunch defense against both James and Dončić. In the last game, he scored a series-high 43 points, underscoring the challenge that the Lakers face.

Coach JJ Redick pointed to the pressing need for Dončić to step up on the defensive end, given the physicality the Timberwolves bring. “We can’t let them control the game,” Redick stated, stressing the importance of reclaiming their fourth-quarter dominance.

The Lakers will also need to find a way to adapt their strategy and potentially exploit mismatches against the Timberwolves’ defenders such as Jaden McDaniels, who has been effective in guarding Dončić this series.

As Game 5 approaches, the stakes are high for Los Angeles. A loss would eliminate them from the playoffs, while a victory would keep their championship dreams alive. The Lakers have shown resilience in the past; however, overcoming the Timberwolves, a team known for their defensive prowess, will require exceptional performances from both James and Dončić.

“This isn’t the end for us, not if we do what we know we can,” James said, speaking to the urgency of the moment. As they prepare for their must-win game, all eyes will be on the duo to lead the Lakers back into the series.
