LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers are grappling with a thin frontcourt following the trade of Anthony Davis, leaving fans and analysts speculating about Christian Wood’s potential return. Wood, who has yet to play this season due to a left knee injury and subsequent surgeries, remains a key subplot as the team navigates the second half of the 2024-25 season.
The Lakers’ injury woes began early this season, with multiple key players sidelined. Wood, who last played on Feb. 14, 2024, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in March and experienced a setback during training camp, requiring another procedure. Despite his progress, including recent reports of him reaching 95-100% capacity on an AlterG treadmill, the team has not provided a specific timeline for his return.
“With Christian, he continues to progress,” Lakers head coach JJ Redick said. “We don’t have necessarily a set date for his return to play with us, but the progress has been good.” Redick also highlighted Wood’s individual court work and rehabilitation milestones.
The Lakers’ frontcourt depth was further depleted by the blockbuster trade that brought Luka Dončić to Los Angeles. The deal sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks and left the Lakers with Jaxson Hayes, Christian Wood, and two-way players Christian Koloko and Trey Jamison as their primary centers. Hayes, a 7-footer, has shown promise but struggles with consistency and foul trouble.
Vice President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka acknowledged the challenge, stating, “We know we have a need for a big.” However, with the trade deadline approaching and a limited market for centers, the Lakers may need to rely on internal solutions, including Wood’s potential return.
Wood’s history with Dončić during their time with the Dallas Mavericks adds intrigue. The pair’s chemistry could prove pivotal if Wood returns, revitalizing the team’s frontcourt dynamics. However, doubts remain about Wood’s readiness to contribute immediately, given the severity of his injury and surgeries.
As the playoffs approach, the Lakers face a critical juncture. Wood’s return could address their frontcourt deficiencies, but the team may also explore additional trades or signings to bolster their roster. For now, Lakers fans wait anxiously, hoping Wood’s progress translates to a meaningful contribution on the court.
