NEW YORK, New York — A celebratory atmosphere enveloped Madison Square Garden just after midnight on February 2 as the Los Angeles Lakers celebrated a significant road victory. The Lakers defeated the New York Knicks, propelled by a combined 60 points from Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic, despite being without their star player Anthony Davis, who was sidelined due to an abdominal strain.

“Me and Bron were talking in the locker room after the game,” Reaves told ESPN. “It was like, if we play like that and add AD to that, we could be dangerous.” Reaves’ sentiments underscored the team’s potential following the recent trade that brought Doncic to Los Angeles.

As the Lakers’ bus navigated the bustling streets of Manhattan, Reaves stumbled upon a social media post that cited a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania regarding a trade involving Davis. Initially dismissive, he remarked, “Oh this is [false],” but as the group chat began to buzz, the reality sank in. He recalled, “AD was texting the group message, like, ‘They traded me.’ I thought it was a prank at first.”

The trade of Davis for Doncic sent shockwaves throughout the NBA and altered the trajectory of both franchises involved. In less than four years, Reaves transformed from an undrafted player into the Lakers’ crucial third option—a position that now sits behind James and Doncic.

This season, the Lakers hold a record of 26-8 when Reaves scores 20 points or more, contrasting with an 18-18 record in games where he does not. While Reaves’ offensive contributions are critical, his defensive capability has been targeted by opponents. With the legacies of James and Doncic already established, Reaves is poised to play a pivotal role in the Lakers’ playoff chances.

Lakers Vice President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka commented on the integration of Reaves into the team dynamic post-trade, stating, “I think of AR because I knew how close he had gotten to Max and AD, and I knew bringing in another primary ball handler would have implications for him.”

Following Doncic’s arrival, many speculated that Reaves’ role would diminish, yet he has been elevated alongside his new teammates. Digital billboards in Los Angeles now showcase James, Doncic, and Reaves together, a testament to his rising prominence.

In face of adversity—a February matchup against the Nuggets saw only Reaves as a starter remaining—he rose to the occasion, showcasing his skills with 37 points, 13 assists, and 8 rebounds. “I just want to win and I feel like anytime I’m on the court, I believe I can change the game,” Reaves stated.

Although the Nuggets secured a narrow victory, Reaves’ performance resonated within the Lakers organization, including first-year coach JJ Redick‘s recognition of his capabilities. Redick’s consistent meetings with Reaves aimed to instill confidence and leadership during periods of struggle.

As the Lakers look to solidify their standing in the competitive Western Conference, Reaves has excelled recently, even setting a franchise record with 15 three-pointers over two games. Furthermore, his usage rate has increased significantly since Doncic joined, suggesting his role as a core asset on a championship-caliber team.

Reaves’ current four-year, $54 million contract has proven to be one of the best value deals in the league. With eligibility for an $89.2 million extension on the horizon, the Lakers show no signs of wanting to part ways with him. Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss praised Reaves’ determination and positive influence, stating, “You can’t help but get drawn in and cheer for them. He just keeps proving himself over and over again.”

As the season progresses and expectations rise, Reaves continues to combat the stereotypes associated with being an undrafted player. The trust he has earned from his teammates, particularly from the experienced James and Doncic, positions him as a key component for the Lakers as they aim for an extended playoff run.
