Lakers Rookie Dalton Knecht Battles Shooting Slump Amid Rising Star Buzz
ATLANTA, Ga. — Los Angeles Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht, once hailed as one of the steals of the 2024 NBA Draft, is navigating a challenging shooting slump as the season progresses. The 23-year-old guard, who initially impressed with his sharpshooting, has struggled in recent weeks, hitting just 17.7% from three-point range over his last 18 games.
Knecht, who scored only two points in a recent win over the Atlanta Hawks, remains confident despite his struggles. “Just keep it the same,” Knecht said. “Me and my dad always said, ‘You walk in the gym, you know you’re the best shooter.’ So that’s just my mindset. I’m gonna walk in there, know I’m the best shooter, and then make or miss, the next shot’s always going in.”
The rookie’s early-season success had him climbing the NBA Rookie of the Year ladder, drawing comparisons to legends like Larry Bird. However, his recent performance has seen him make just 12 of his last 63 three-point attempts, a stark contrast to his earlier form.
Despite the slump, Knecht remains a candidate for the Rising Stars game during the NBA All-Star Weekend. This year’s format allows the Rising Stars game winner to participate in the NBA All-Star Game, a stage where Knecht could thrive. “Nah, I haven’t really thought about it,” Knecht admitted. “I’m pretty sure now I will think about it. I’m not sure, I’ll think about it next time.”
Teammate Gabe Vincent, who has experienced similar ups and downs, offered support. “I think there’s a lot of noise around this game,” Vincent said. “But I don’t think there’s anything I’ve done more in my life than shoot a basketball. So that’s gonna be the last thing I lose confidence on.”
As Knecht works to regain his form, his focus remains on contributing to the Lakers’ success. “Staying with a positive mindset, always going out there and giving my best, shooting the ball, playing defense, grabbing rebounds and stuff like that,” he said. “So, just making sure to do those little things.”
Fans have speculated about the cause of Knecht’s slump, with some attributing it to the “LeBron James effect.” However, others have pointed to the natural challenges rookies face, such as tighter defensive coverage and mental fatigue. “Scouting and tighter defense got him mentally fatigued. He’ll be alright, it’s growing pains,” one fan noted.
LeBron James, the Lakers’ veteran leader, has also been a source of encouragement for Knecht. “The King went as far as calling out fans who call him a liar for appreciating Knecht,” a source close to the team revealed. As the season progresses, Knecht’s ability to adapt and overcome his struggles will be crucial for both his development and the Lakers’ playoff aspirations.
