Luka Doncic Los Angeles Lakers Anthony Davis Trade

LOS ANGELES – In a stunning move that reshaped the landscape of the NBA, the Dallas Mavericks traded All-NBA guard Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for All-NBA forward/center Anthony Davis, sources told ESPN. The three-team deal, which also involved the Utah Jazz, was finalized early Sunday morning, sending shockwaves throughout the league.

Dončić, a five-time All-NBA selection and former Western Conference champion, joins forces with LeBron James in Los Angeles, forming a dynamic new 1-2 punch. Davis, meanwhile, will headline a star duo in Dallas alongside Kyrie Irving.

The trade comes just hours after the Lakers defeated the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

“I believe that defense wins championships,” Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison told ESPN. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”

Dončić hasn’t played for Dallas since Christmas Day, when he experienced a groin injury.

This blockbuster trade immediately sparked debate and amazed fans across the league. Cleveland center Tristan Thompson wrote on X, “Luka getting traded from Dallas has to have a deeper story behind it. This just doesn’t happen on a random Saturday night.” Knicks guard Jalen Brunson questioned, “April fools right?” in another post.

The trade’s ramifications are significant for both franchises.

The Lakers, long a team built around its iconic stars, have now secured their future cornerstone in Dončić, a generational talent approaching his prime. Dončić could have signed a supermax contract this summer, one that could have paid him about $345 million over five seasons. He’s still extension-eligible, though now likely cannot sign a five-year deal worth more than $230 million this summer. The Lakers are banking on Dončić leading them to a championship and revitalizing the franchise.

The Mavericks, on the other hand, are embarking on a rebuilding phase with the Laker’s versatile talents. Davis’ arrival brings a dominant defensive presence to Dallas, and the team can now start building around him and Kyrie Irving.

The trade also raises questions about LeBron James’ future with the Lakers. Currently in his 21st season, James has stated his desire to focus on basketball, not personnel decisions. However, this blockbuster move, made without his input, may prompt him to reconsider his future in Los Angeles.
