The 2024 Formula 1 season is entering its final stretch with significant anticipation surrounding the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. Lando Norris, piloting for McLaren, is mounting a challenge against Max Verstappen, the championship leader from Red Bull Racing. With 180 points remaining up for grabs, Norris faces a daunting task of outpacing Verstappen by an average of 8.9 points to clinch his first-ever Formula 1 title.

The recent race in Singapore saw McLaren maintaining their lead in the constructors’ standings, expanding their gap over reigning champions Red Bull to 41 points. This season has also seen a tightening race for second in the drivers’ standings, where Norris holds a 52-point deficit to Verstappen, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc trails Norris by 34 points.

Despite his victory drought since the Spanish Grand Prix in June, Verstappen continues to exert control over the championship, thanks to consistent performances. However, Norris gained momentary relief with a dominant win at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore. Starting from pole, he maintained his lead to finish over 20 seconds ahead of Verstappen.

Controversy shadowed the Singapore Grand Prix when Daniel Ricciardo, driving for Red Bull’s sister team, RB, snatched the vital fastest lap bonus point from Norris. The FIA, governing body of motorsport, announced plans to eliminate this rule from the 2025 season, citing ongoing debates over its implications.

As Formula 1 reins in motion after its autumn break, the remaining six races assure high-stakes competition. Particularly, the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, beckons as the start of the decisive phase of the season. Upcoming events will feature two triple-headers, including three sprint races, further intensifying the battle for supremacy between McLaren and Red Bull.
