Larry Fitzgerald, the legendary wide receiver, is set to serve as the honorary captain for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers as they face off against their rival Syracuse in their Week 9 matchup at Acrisure Stadium. This honor comes as part of the team’s celebration of Fitzgerald’s enshrinement into the College Football Hall of Fame, announced on August 7.
Fitzgerald had a stellar career with the Pitt Panthers, playing for the team from 2002 to 2003. During his time, he achieved numerous accolades, including being named the 2002 Big East Rookie of the Year and the 2003 Big East Offensive Player of the Year. He also earned unanimous All-American honors and won both the Walter Camp and Biletnikoff Awards in 2003. His performance in the 2003 season remains one of the best in Pitt history, with 92 catches for 1,672 yards and 22 touchdowns.
After his successful college career, Fitzgerald was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He spent all 17 years of his NFL career with the Cardinals, accumulating 1,432 catches for 17,492 yards and 121 touchdowns. His NFL career highlights include 11 Pro Bowl appearances, two Second Team All-Pro selections, and being named to the NFL 100th Anniversary Team and the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
To commemorate his achievements, the Pitt Panthers will also offer a limited number of Larry Fitzgerald bobbleheads to fans before the game, along with a ticket discount. This celebration underscores Fitzgerald’s significant impact on both the college and professional football landscapes).
