Las Vegas Man Charged in Jontay Porter Betting Scandal
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A Las Vegas man was arrested Sunday in connection with an illegal betting scheme involving former NBA player Jontay Porter, who allegedly manipulated his performance to help gamblers win prop bets. Shane Hennen, 39, was taken into custody at Harry Reid International Airport and faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.
Hennen is accused of receiving insider information from Porter’s co-conspirators about the player’s plans to intentionally underperform in two Toronto Raptors games earlier this year. Prosecutors allege Hennen used the tips to place bets through proxies and shared the information with other gamblers. He is scheduled to appear in federal court Monday.
Porter, who pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, admitted to participating in the scheme to pay off gambling debts. According to court documents, Porter texted co-conspirators during a Jan. 22 game against the Los Angeles Clippers, stating he would not play much longer due to an eye injury. He also allegedly informed them he would leave a Jan. 26 game early, claiming the injury persisted.
Hennen received screenshots of these messages and placed a $3,700 bet that Porter would not reach 4.5 rebounds in the Jan. 26 game, according to the complaint. Prosecutors said Hennen also bet $2,400 on Porter underperforming in a March 20 game against the Sacramento Kings, where the player logged just three minutes with no points or assists.
In total, four individuals have been charged in connection with the scheme. Two co-conspirators have already pleaded guilty, while Porter awaits sentencing, which was postponed from December to May. The case highlights the growing scrutiny of sports betting integrity as legal gambling expands across the U.S.
