Los Angeles, CA — NBA legends LeBron James and Steve Nash recently shared their experiences facing off against San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich during an episode of the Mind The Game show. Both players discussed the immense psychological pressure and strategic challenges they encountered when competing against Popovich’s disciplined teams.

During the conversation, Nash described how Popovich’s presence on the sideline felt almost intimidating. ‘Was Pop a spy in the military? I’m serious. He spoke Russian. He came from the Air Force Academy. I always felt like there was a little bit of a disadvantage, or a hill we were trying to climb, just Pop himself,’ Nash said.

Nash further elaborated on the pressure during games, saying, ‘You can sense it. Like okay, I have to guard Tony, Manu, Timmy… and then you look to the sideline—and you got Pop over there. It’s like he’s on the floor as well—but standing on the sideline.’

LeBron James, who famously triumphed over the Spurs in the 2013 NBA Finals, resonated with Nash’s thoughts. He articulated the psychological exhaustion that accompanies a series against Popovich’s teams. ‘You know when you come into a series against a Gregg Popovich team—or a Bill Belichick football team—you know you have to beat them. They’re not going to beat themselves.’

James mentioned the mental pressure athletes feel against such competitive teams, saying, ‘It’s like, you start to put more pressure on yourself, saying, We’ve got to play perfect basketball—which is impossible.’

Popovich, who took over the Spurs as head coach in 1996, is known for his strict, military-style coaching and has guided the team to five NBA championships. His background includes playing college basketball for the Air Force Falcons and extensive training in Air Force intelligence.

This past November, Popovich suffered a mild stroke, prompting assistant coach Mitch Johnson to take over the team’s coaching duties for the current season.
