ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Renowned Dutch football coach Leo Beenhakker passed away on April 10, 2025, at the age of 82. His influence on the sport spanned decades, leading elite teams such as Ajax, Feyenoord, and Real Madrid to numerous victories.
Born on August 2, 1942, in Rotterdam, Beenhakker’s remarkable coaching career began with amateur club SV Epe. He then moved through various teams including SC Veendam, Go Ahead Eagles, and FC Volendam, before achieving greatness with some of Europe’s top clubs.
“Don Leo, rest in peace…” was the heartfelt message shared by Feyenoord on social media, reflecting the immense respect he garnered in the football community. Beenhakker’s strategic prowess helped to secure multiple championships, including three La Liga titles with Real Madrid.
In addition to his club successes, Beenhakker also served as the national team coach for the Netherlands, Poland, and Trinidad and Tobago. His tenure with the Dutch national team included crucial leadership roles, while he famously guided Trinidad and Tobago to the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
