John Robinson, a revered figure in American football and one of the most successful coaches in USC history, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the age of 89. He died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, due to complications from pneumonia.

Robinson had a storied career, guiding the USC Trojans to numerous victories and accolades during his two tenures from 1976 to 1982 and again from 1993 to 1997. Under his leadership, USC won the 1978 national championship, five Pac-10 titles, and four Rose Bowls. His coaching record at USC stands at 104-35-4, with a remarkable 74.1% win rate.

Robinson’s impact extended beyond college football. He also had a successful stint as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams from 1983 to 1991, leading the team to six playoff appearances and two NFC championship games. His NFL career record with the Rams was 75-68, making him the winningest coach in Rams history until recently surpassed by Sean McVay.

In addition to his coaching at USC and the Rams, Robinson coached at UNLV from 1999 to 2004 and served as an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders in 1975. He was also a senior consultant for the LSU football program during their national championship season in 2019.

Robinson’s legacy includes producing 24 All-American first teamers, 22 NFL first-round draft picks, and two Heisman Trophy winners: Charles White and Marcus Allen. He was inducted into several halls of fame, including the College Football Hall of Fame, the USC Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame).

Robinson is survived by his wife, Beverly, four children, two stepchildren, and 10 grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held following the college football season, as per his wishes).
