Lena Dunham Advocates for Trans Rights at Visibility Rally

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Actress Lena Dunham made a rare public appearance on Sunday, March 31, 2025, at the Trans Day of Visibility rally held at the National Mall, where she spoke passionately in support of transgender rights.
Joined by fellow advocates from the Christopher Street Project, Dunham condemned the “horrific government abuses” perpetuated by the Trump-Vance administration. “We must help protect the civil rights of our trans friends and family,” she told the audience, emphasizing the ongoing fight against systemic discrimination.
Dunham stressed the importance of unity among the trans community and its allies, declaring, “We must stand strong in the face of such hatred and misunderstanding.” Her remarks were made amidst a particularly charged political climate regarding trans rights.
Reflecting on her personal experiences, Dunham shared insights about her relationship with her trans brother, Cyrus Grace Dunham. “When my sister came out as trans, I learned that I actually never had a sister at all, but a wise, funny, resilient, powerful, remarkable brother,” she stated. “The experience of going through my brother’s transition has been a profound gift to our family. We have laughed, we have cried, we have learned and re-learned and laughed some more.”
Dunham quipped about the humorous moments shared within her family, recounting an instance involving her father. “You really have not lived until you have seen a 75-year-old, white, cis man standing in the middle of a party of trans girls trying to call an outfit ‘a slay.’ He really tried, and we love that for him,” she joked, highlighting her family’s support for her brother’s journey.
Addressing the trans and non-binary community directly, she said, “We love you, we see you, we bow down to your charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent, and we are so lucky to love you and to fight with you and for you.” Dunham concluded her emotional address with a strong statement: “Trans liberation is our liberation. And without it, none of us are free.”
The rally organized by the Christopher Street Project aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by transgender individuals. Executive Director Tyler Hack stated, “We’re here and not going anywhere,” underscoring the commitment of the organization to continue advocating for trans rights.
Dunham’s appearance at the rally is significant, particularly as it follows her recent decision to step back from acting due to body-shaming experiences. “I was not willing to have another experience like what I’d experienced around [my HBO series] Girls at this point in my life,” she explained in past interviews, indicating her focus on protecting her mental health.
The Trans Day of Visibility, observed annually on March 31, serves to highlight the contributions of transgender individuals while addressing the injustices they face. Dunham’s advocacy work is part of a broader movement to ensure that the rights of trans individuals are recognized and protected.
