Canada’s rising tennis star Leylah Annie Fernandez faced a tough defeat at the Internationaux de France as she was ousted by Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in straight sets of 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) at Roland-Garros.

The match marked the fourth encounter between Fernandez and Jabeur, with the Tunisian claiming victory in all previous three encounters, each time in three sets.

Played on the Suzanne-Lenglen court, Jabeur clinched the first set by breaking Fernandez’s serve in the seventh game to take a lead of 4-3.

In response, Fernandez swiftly broke back to level the score at 4-4, only to lose her serve once again, granting Jabeur the upper hand. Jabeur finally sealed the set on her third set point after 46 minutes of intense battle.

The second set saw both athletes neck and neck. Fernandez managed to secure her service in the seventh game, despite committing her fourth double fault at 40-30, which could have been costly.

Leading 5-4, Fernandez found herself at a set point, with a chance to force a decider. She even held a match point in a tightly contested 10th game, but Jabeur narrowly escaped, pushing the set to a tiebreak.

Although Fernandez did not back down and pushed Jabeur to the brink of a third set (5-4 in the tiebreak), Jabeur was determined to finish the match. In the end, Jabeur emerged victorious after 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Post-match, Fernandez highlighted the importance of learning from such defeats, expressing her clear sight on areas needing improvement to move in the right direction.

Following her victory over Fernandez, Jabeur is set to face Clara Tauson in the next round, who defeated Sofia Kenin in the previous match.
