Leylah Annie Fernandez Secures Opening Win At Wimbledon

Canadian tennis sensation Leylah Annie Fernandez started her Wimbledon campaign on a high note, defeating Italian player Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets.

Fernandez, seeded 30th, showcased her skills to overcome Bronzetti 6-4, 6-3 in a match that lasted an hour and 30 minutes, marking their first encounter on the WTA tour.

The 21-year-old Quebec native, coming off a runner-up finish at Eastbourne last week, will now face former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the next round, who dominated Alycia Parks 6-2, 6-0.

Throughout the match, Fernandez displayed a slightly more aggressive game than her Italian opponent, winning 80% of points on her first serve compared to Bronzetti’s 64%, and also seizing 80% of net points.

With a total of 21 winners and 17 unforced errors, Fernandez’s performance was solid and efficient on the grass courts of Wimbledon.

Meanwhile, Ontario’s Marina Stakusic, making her Grand Slam debut, faced a tough challenge against 27th seed Katerina Siniakova, falling 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round.

On the men’s side, Quebec’s Félix Auger-Aliassime kicked off his singles campaign against Australian player Thanasi Kokkikanis, looking to make his mark at this prestigious tournament.
