Liberty Prepare to Face Atlanta Dream After Defensive Setback

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Liberty are looking to rebound after suffering a tough loss to the Indiana Fever, where they allowed 102 points. Head Coach Sandy Brondello emphasized the need for improvement during Monday’s film session, noting that they “can’t give up” so many points.
Forward Breanna Stewart pointed out that the defensive issues stemmed from “overcomplicating things” and “miscommunication” during key moments. The Liberty must quickly regroup as they prepare to host the Atlanta Dream, who are a formidable opponent known for their shooting ability.
On Saturday, the Liberty struggled against the Fever’s three-point shooting, giving up 17 shots from beyond the arc, including seven from Caitlin Clark. The Fever shot an impressive 48 percent from three-point range, highlighting the defensive challenges the Liberty face.
The Dream, who average 10.2 three-pointers per game, rank second in the league behind the Liberty. Atlanta’s Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, both top performers, contribute significantly to their scoring, with Gray ranking second in the league at 21 points per game.
<p“We are really similar teams in how we play,” said Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu after practice. “They shoot well and attack from all angles, so it’s going to be a great test for us.”
The Dream are currently on a three-game winning streak, winning each game by at least 18 points, and they are third in the league, averaging 84.6 points per game.
Recent offseason acquisitions, including 10-time All-Star Brittney Griner, have strengthened Atlanta, allowing them to dominate the boards with an average of 38.6 rebounds per game. “This is going to be an even bigger challenge,” Stewart remarked, acknowledging the need to defend the perimeter while dealing with formidable inside players.
Fortunately for the Liberty, they will welcome back Jonquel Jones, who missed two games due to a right ankle sprain. Her return will surely bolster the team’s defensive efforts. Despite the recent setback, the Liberty still lead the league with a 91.3 defensive rating.
<p“Just very controllable things,” said Ionescu, referring to the mental errors that plagued the team against the Fever. “We’re optimistic and ready for the next challenge.”
