Liberty Upsets Texas A&M, Advances to Softball Super Regionals

BRYAN, Texas — Liberty University made headlines on Sunday night by defeating top-seeded Texas A&M 6-5 in a thrilling game to win the Bryan-College Station Regional. The victory eliminates the Aggies, marking them as the first No. 1 national seed to be ousted in the regional round since the tournament’s seeding began in 2005.
Rachel Roupe led the Flames with two home runs, while Savannah Jessee added a two-run shot. This win improved Liberty’s record to 50-13, paving the way for their next challenge against No. 16 seed Oregon in the super regionals next weekend.
Texas A&M initially took a 2-0 lead after KK Dement hit a home run in the second inning. However, Liberty fought back with strong performances, including a grand slam from Roupe in their previous game against the Aggies, showing their resilience and power at the plate.
In the decisive game, Liberty gained momentum in the sixth inning when Jessee’s two-run homer tied the game at 3-3. Following that, Roupe’s powerful hit off the scoreboard helped the Flames take a commanding 6-3 lead. Despite a late surge from the Aggies, scoring two runs in the eighth inning, Liberty held firm, with pitcher Kaylan Yoder collecting her first save of the season.
Coach Dot Richardson’s team is now focused on their upcoming matchup against Oregon, where they will look to continue their impressive playoff run. The standout performance against Texas A&M has shown that Liberty is a force to be reckoned with in this year’s NCAA softball tournament.
