Lifeguards Revive Surfer Makai McNamara After Near-Fatal Wipeout at Pipe

HAWAII, USA – Makai McNamara, the son of surfing legend Liam McNamara, was revived on the beach following a near-fatal wipeout while surfing at Pipeline this past weekend. McNamara, 29, suffered the incident amidst challenging 8-12 foot northwest waves, leading to urgent medical intervention.
During the session, McNamara attempted to ride a difficult insider wave when he potentially hit the bottom or his board, resulting in him being knocked unconscious. A nearby firefighter performed CPR until lifeguards arrived on the scene to assist.
Known for his family’s deep roots in the surfing world, McNamara’s lineage includes his father, Liam, and his uncle, Garrett, both celebrated big wave surfers. In a previous World Surf League (WSL) interview, Makai expressed admiration for their accomplishments while also emphasizing the importance of forging his own path. “You can’t just think you’re the man because of someone else’s accomplishments,” he said. “Now, all of their accomplishments in surfing give me motivation to do better.”
When questioned about his decision not to wear a helmet while surfing, in contrast to his brother Landon, who competes in more extreme waves, Makai explained, “I’m kind of a scaredy cat, but I try not to think about wearing or not wearing a helmet and focus on making the waves I go for.” He further reflected on the unpredictability of surf injuries, stating, “Even if you are wearing full body armor, when it’s your time, it’s your time.”
As updates about Makai’s recovery circulate, the surfing community remains hopeful for his swift return to the water. His family along with friends have expressed their concerns and support. “Our thoughts and prayers are for a full recovery for Makai,” stated a family representative.
Further news and updates will be provided as the situation develops. The surfing community is rallying for Makai, showcasing the bond that exists among surfers, especially during challenging times.
