Twenty years into his illustrious career, Lionel Messi remains committed to making history both in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Inter Miami and on the international stage with Argentina. Speaking at a ceremony that celebrated his world-record achievements, Messi expressed no intention of slowing down.

“I always try to be at my best,” Messi said during Thursday’s event at Chase Stadium, attended by MARCA newspaper CEO Juan Ignacio Gallardo and Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas. “Coming here [to Miami] wasn’t a retirement. It was to try to keep making this club great, a club with a short history because it’s very new.” He added his commitment to helping the team win more titles in the future.

Since joining Inter Miami last summer, Messi has led the team to a league title and added another trophy to their cabinet. The club stands on the brink of breaking the MLS single-season points record as they prepare to face their next opponent on Decision Day.

The Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs beckon, with Inter Miami ready to compete in the Round One Best-of-3 Series. For Messi, securing an MLS Cup would cap a season of high expectations, even as he battled injuries.

“It’s been a long year. I had to go through injuries, an important injury,” Messi reflected. “But I feel good, I feel strong, physically I feel good. And hopefully, we finish the best way possible.” Despite setbacks, Messi has posted an impressive 17 goals and 15 assists in just 18 appearances, maintaining his position in the MVP conversation.

Another notable aspect of Messi’s year is his continued dedication to the Argentina national team, with which he celebrated victory in a recent tournament. Although he remains undecided about participating in the 2026 World Cup, his focus remains on immediate challenges.

“I’ve always said that everything happens for a reason,” Messi stated about his potential participation in future World Cups. “I try to enjoy the day-to-day, and we’ll see when the time comes.”
