David Shaw Detroit Lions Coaching Staff

DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with former Stanford head coach David Shaw to serve as their passing game coordinator, the team announced Thursday. Shaw, 52, joins new offensive coordinator John Morton, with whom he has previously worked at multiple NFL stops.

Shaw brings a wealth of experience to the Lions, having served as Stanford’s head coach from 2011 to 2022, where he compiled a 96-54 record and won three Pac-12 conference titles. He also led the Cardinal to two Rose Bowl victories during his tenure. Before returning to his alma mater as a coach in 2007, Shaw held assistant coaching roles with the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens.

Most recently, Shaw worked as a senior personnel executive for the Denver Broncos during the 2024 season. He also interviewed for the Chicago Bears‘ head coaching position earlier this year, which ultimately went to former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Shaw’s hiring comes as the Lions look to rebuild their coaching staff after a tumultuous offseason. He will work closely with Morton, who served as the Broncos’ passing game coordinator for the past two seasons. The duo previously collaborated with the Raiders from 1998 to 2001 and again with the Broncos in 2024.

“David’s track record speaks for itself,” said a Lions spokesperson. “His experience and leadership will be invaluable as we continue to develop our offensive strategy.”

The Lions are aiming to strengthen their passing game, which has been inconsistent in recent seasons. Shaw’s expertise in offensive schemes and player development is expected to play a key role in the team’s efforts to improve.

Shaw’s return to the NFL sidelines marks his first coaching role since 2005, when he served as the Ravens’ wide receivers coach. His hiring is seen as a significant move for the Lions as they prepare for the upcoming season.
