Lions Re-Sign Levi Onwuzurike to Short-Term Deal

Detroit, MI — The Detroit Lions have announced the re-signing of defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike to a one-year, $5.5 million contract extension. The decision, revealed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, aims to solidify the team’s defensive line as the 2025 season approaches.
Onwuzurike, selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, entered the league with high expectations under the leadership of General Manager Brad Holmes and Head Coach Dan Campbell. However, his journey has been marred by injuries, including a significant back issue that sidelined him for his entire second season.
After returning to full health, Onwuzurike displayed a resurgence in the 2024 season, contributing across both defensive tackle and defensive end positions. In total, he participated in 10 games, earning his first 10 career starts and posting impressive statistics: 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and one forced fumble.
“I feel back to my old self,” Onwuzurike said. “I’m ready to show everyone that I can be the player the Lions drafted and more.”
With the recent contract, the Lions have positioned Onwuzurike for a critical year where he can prove his resilience and potentially secure a more lucrative deal in the future. The depth of the Lions’ defensive line has also been bolstered with players such as Alim McNeill, DJ Reader, and Aidan Hutchinson under contract for 2025.
The Lions will continue adjusting their roster as the opening of the NFL’s negotiating window approaches at noon ET on Monday, ahead of the official signing period that starts at 4 p.m. ET on March 12. This marks a pivotal time for franchises as they aim to address their biggest roster needs.
