Lions Sign Veteran Nose Tackle Lopez to One-Year Contract

DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions have signed veteran nose tackle Jonathan Lopez to a one-year contract worth $4.65 million, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero. This move enhances the Lions’ defensive line as they aim for a more competitive 2025 season.
Lopez, a sixth-round draft pick in 2022, brings experience after starting 50 games combined for the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals during his four-year career. Last season, the 26-year-old was a full-time starter for the Cardinals, where he recorded 17 tackles for loss and showed potential as a solid contributor on the field.
“Joining my hometown team is a dream come true,” Lopez said in a statement. “I’m excited about this new chapter and ready to make an impact on the Lions’ defense.”
The Lions have been proactive in their off-season moves, extending players like Alim McNeill and signing D.J. Reader in the previous year. However, their defensive line is still undergoing changes, with some notable free agents remaining on the market.
In the 2024 season, Lopez was ranked as a top-50 interior defensive lineman by Pro Football Focus, showcasing his development in a critical role. As the Lions prepare for the upcoming season, general manager Brad Holmes highlighted the importance of shoring up the defensive line.
“Adding Lopez is a strategic move that strengthens our front line and gives us depth,” Holmes remarked. “We’re focused on creating a tough and competitive defense.”
With both Lopez and McNeill on the interior, the Lions look to improve on their previous season’s performance, aiming for a playoff berth in the highly competitive NFC North. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as training camp approaches.
