Lions Urged to Delay Contracts for Star Players Amid Offseason Decisions

DETROIT, Mich. — As the NFL offseason unfolds, the Detroit Lions are being advised to postpone contract negotiations with key players Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams. Analyst Mike Payton emphasizes the importance of timing as both players’ performances last season were affected by injury and suspension, suggesting the team should instead focus on securing standout safety Kerby Joseph.
In a recent article for A to Z Sports, Payton explained that both Hutchinson and Williams are eligible for fifth-year options, allowing the Lions to negotiate extensions next year. “The likelihood is that both players are probably going to want to wait until next year anyway,” Payton stated. “That way they can have a good season and maximize their profits.”
Hutchinson suffered a significant injury that limited his availability after Week 6, while Williams faced a suspension that impacted his playtime. “Right now, the Lions would not be offering them top dollar based on those factors,” Payton noted. Instead, he recommends that the Lions pursue a deal for Joseph, who had an All-Pro season and garnered votes for Defensive Player of the Year.
If the Lions secure a deal for Joseph quickly, they may save money before other top safeties, such as Kyle Hamilton, negotiate their contracts. Payton referred to this strategy as “getting ahead of the market.”
According to statistics from last season, Williams scored an impressive touchdown, while Hutchinson recorded key defensive metrics despite his limited play. Joseph stood out with significant contributions during the 2024 season.
The Lions, who have not reached a Super Bowl, are keen on building a competitive roster that underscores their desire to contend. Despite possible losses, such as offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, the team is hopeful for the re-emergence of a strong defense under new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. Payton remains optimistic that Hutchinson’s return to form could benefit the Lions next season.
Further strategies for the Lions include examining free agency options. Analyst Devon Platana highlighted the potential acquisition of cornerback Desmond Fuller, who struggled with the Miami Dolphins last season. With various cornerbacks entering free agency, including Carlton Davis and Emmanuel Moseley, the Lions need to explore reliable replacements.
“Fuller is still a name the Lions should keep an eye on in free agency,” Platana commented, noting that a solid environment under head coach Dan Campbell could revitalize Fuller’s career.
The impending NFL free agency period opens on March 10, and there is speculation regarding potential trades involving Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II. The Lions may benefit from acquiring a young cornerback like Newsome, who could offer significant value. Analysts suggest that the Browns might need to offload talent due to financial constraints, positioning the Lions for potential negotiations.
As the offseason progresses, the Lions look to position themselves strategically, weighing the timing of contract extensions against the pursuit of suitable replacements in free agency.
