Liverpool Denied Late Penalty In Controversial Draw Against Manchester City

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed frustration as his team were denied what he believed was a clear penalty in a dramatic 1-1 draw against Manchester City at Anfield in the Premier League.

The contentious moment occurred in stoppage time when City’s Jeremy Doku made contact with Alexis Mac Allister in the chest with his boot, leading to a VAR check which resulted in no penalty being awarded. This decision came after John Stones‘ 23rd-minute goal was canceled out by Mac Allister’s strike.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Klopp vehemently argued that the incident was an obvious foul and should have resulted in a penalty and a booking for Doku. He stressed that football people around the globe would agree that it was a clear-cut decision.

Despite the disappointment of the refereeing decision, Klopp praised his team’s performance, particularly highlighting their resilience and attacking intent, despite being plagued by injuries.

The draw leaves Liverpool and Manchester City leveled on points at the top of the table, with City leading by goal difference. With only 10 games remaining, the Premier League title race is reaching a tense climax.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the intense pressure his team faced at Anfield, describing the second half as a relentless onslaught from Liverpool. Guardiola emphasized the importance of staying in the title race and praised his team’s resilience during the tough moments.

Guardiola’s Manchester City, known for their pursuit of a fourth successive Premier League title, are accustomed to tight title races and remain focused on the remaining 30 points up for grabs in the season.
