Ljutomer Celebrates 150 Years of Harness Racing Tradition

LJUTOMER, Slovenia – The Kasaški klub Ljutomer is set to celebrate a remarkable 150 years of harness racing in 2025, marking a significant milestone that reflects the club’s dedication to equine sports and the vibrant culture of Prlekija.
The journey of the club commenced on September 12, 1874, when local pioneers first harnessed horses for a race along a country road from Lukavsko polje to Globetkin potok. The following year, on May 26, 1875, the ‘Društvo za dirkanje s kobilami v kasu v Ljutomeru’ was officially registered in Graz, Austria, laying the foundation for a proud tradition that continues to thrive today.
The new season will kick off on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the Ljutomer racetrack, promising an exciting celebration for horse racing aficionados. The event will feature six races with 54 competitors, heralding a dynamic start to the season with high expectations for thrilling performances.
Attention will particularly focus on the youth contingent of drivers entering the realm of harness racing, bringing fresh energy to the sport. Luka Sagaj from Kasaški klub Ljutomer and Črt Laufer Selinšek from KD Slovenske Gorice Lenart will be among the first to officially race this season.
The presence of these young talents indicates a bright future for harness racing, instilling optimism for successful generational renewal. Spectators can also look forward to a rich accompanying program featuring culinary delights, refreshing beverages, and snacks, ensuring a delightful experience for attendees.
A highlight of the event will be the ceremonial cutting of a vine descendant of the oldest grapevine in the world, performed by Stane Kocutar, custodian of the Maribor vine, and Lea Vučko, Miss Wine of Ljutomer. This moment will symbolically link the traditions of harness racing and winemaking, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Prlekija.
The harness races in Ljutomer represent more than just a sporting spectacle; they embody the local identity and community pride.
