London native and former standout player for North Laurel and UK, Reed Sheppard, is set to shine in the NBA after being selected as the No. 3 pick by the Houston Rockets. The announcement was made during Wednesday’s NBA Draft, marking a significant milestone in Sheppard’s basketball career.

Sheppard, known for his exceptional shooting skills, captured attention during his sole season at UK by showcasing a remarkable 52.1% success rate in 3-point shots. Averaging 12.5 points per game and 2.5 steals per game, Sheppard was recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Year, solidifying his place in collegiate basketball history.

At the Draft Combine, Sheppard’s impressive 42-inch vertical leap caught the eye of scouts and fans alike, placing him among the elite in terms of athleticism. Coupled with his high basketball IQ, Sheppard’s potential as a top-tier player is undeniable.

Notably, Sheppard’s achievement marks a significant moment for the mountain region of Kentucky, particularly regions 13-15, as he becomes the first player hailing from this area to be drafted into the NBA since Todd May in 1987. The community of London, where Sheppard grew up, is buzzing with pride and anticipation for his professional debut.

In a heartwarming display of support, friends, former teammates, teachers, and community members gathered at Faith Assembly of God in London to celebrate Sheppard’s success. Pastor Rodney Goodlett expressed the collective excitement and pride felt by the local community, highlighting Sheppard’s journey from a promising young player to an NBA draftee.
