Long Beach State Vs Uc Irvine Basketball Game 2025

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State (7-14, 3-6 Big West) will attempt to snap a three-game home losing streak when they host the league-leading UC Irvine Anteaters (18-3, 8-1 Big West) on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 7 p.m. ET. The game, part of the Black and Blue Rivalry, will be broadcast on ESPN+ from the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach enters the matchup fresh off a 69-78 road victory over Cal Poly, led by standout performances from senior guard Devin Askew, who scored a career-high 35 points, and TJ Wainwright, who added 12 points. UC Irvine, meanwhile, comes in hot after a 71-55 home win against Hawaii, powered by Myles Che‘s 17 points and Justin Hohn’s 13 points.

Long Beach State has been efficient offensively in Big West play, leading the conference with a 47.0% field goal percentage. The team also ranks second in three-point shooting at 41.4%, with eight players shooting over 40% from the field. Askew, averaging 18.2 points and 4.5 assists per game, has been a key leader for the Beach, scoring in double figures in every game this season.

UC Irvine, the Big West frontrunner, boasts a balanced attack and strong defense. The Anteaters have won 18 of their 21 games this season, including an 8-1 record in conference play. Their only Big West loss came against UC Santa Barbara earlier this month.

Long Beach State faces an uphill battle against the Anteaters, who have dominated the series in recent years. However, the Beach’s recent offensive surge, including a 51.8% shooting performance in December, provides hope for an upset. Head coach Chris Acker, in his first season at Long Beach State, has emphasized a rebuild with 12 newcomers and just three returning players from last year’s NCAA Tournament team.

“We know UC Irvine is a tough opponent, but we’re focused on playing our game and executing our plan,” said Acker. “Our guys have shown resilience, and we’re ready for the challenge.”

The game marks the first meeting between the two teams this season and could have significant implications for the Big West standings. Long Beach State, currently in the middle of the pack, is looking to climb the rankings, while UC Irvine aims to maintain its position at the top.
