Madrid, SpainLorenzo Musetti, a 23-year-old Italian tennis player, advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday evening. He defeated Alex de Minaur in a decisive match, winning 6-4, 6-2, ensuring that he will break into the ATP Top 10 for the first time next week.

With this victory, Musetti will move up to No. 9 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, making him the sixth Italian to enter the Top 10 since 1973. Musetti expressed his surprise at his own performance, stating, “I’m not surprised [to be in the quarter-finals], I’m surprised with myself. After Monte-Carlo, something changed in myself, a positive click forward.”

In addition to de Minaur, Musetti has recorded significant wins in the tournament. He defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round after overcoming a challenging position of 1-4, 15-40 in the first set. His opening match saw him prevail against Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Musetti began the tournament ranked No. 11 and will increase his point total to 3,350 after the event, moving closer to the goal of competing for a Masters 1000 trophy. He will next face Gabriel Diallo, a Canadian player who has also reached the quarter-finals in a surprising comeback.

This strong performance comes on the heels of Musetti’s bronze medal win at the recent Masters event and his maiden ATP Masters 1000 final in Monte-Carlo. Should he continue on this path, he aims to elevate his ATP ranking further.
