Los Angeles Dodgers on Brink of Historic World Series Sweep Against New York Yankees
The last time a team was swept in the World Series was in 2012, when the San Francisco Giants dominated the Detroit Tigers with a 4-0 victory. This sweep marked the 21st time in Major League history that a team has been swept in the World Series.
Currently, the Los Angeles Dodgers are on the verge of achieving a similar feat, leading the New York Yankees 3-0 in the 2024 World Series. If the Dodgers secure one more win, it will be their second World Series sweep against the Yankees, following their 1963 sweep.
World Series sweeps are relatively rare, with only 21 occurrences in the 119 completed World Series. The American League has accounted for 13 of these sweeps, with the New York Yankees responsible for eight of them. The National League has eight sweeps, with the New York/San Francisco Giants and the Cincinnati Reds being the most successful teams in this regard.
The Yankees, who have not been swept since 1976 when the Cincinnati Reds’ “Big Red Machine” won their second consecutive title, are facing the possibility of their third World Series sweep. The Dodgers, seeking their eighth World Series title, are poised to make history if they can close out the series in Game 4.
