Louisville Urban League Derby Gala 2023

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 8th annual Louisville Urban League Derby Gala took place Saturday night at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, bringing together about 1,200 attendees for a night of celebration and purpose.

Lyndon Pryor, president and CEO of the Louisville Urban League, describes the sold-out event as “partying with a purpose.” His organization aims to advance social and economic equity for Black and marginalized communities.

“We do that through our programs focused on jobs, justice, education, health, housing, and Black business,” Pryor stated.

The event transformed the sports complex into a vibrant space with reserved tables and a concert stage, illuminated with blue lighting. Attendees included Louisville native Veronica McTier, who highlighted the importance of returning home for the gala, saying she has attended for the past 30 years.

“It’s the most exciting time that Kentucky ever sees,” McTier said, referencing the Kentucky Derby events.

Pryor shared that the gala featured a wonderful dinner and program where guests could learn about the community’s needs and initiatives.

Prominent sponsors of the event included Humana, CenterWell, and Superior Maintenance Company. The gala also honored the late Junior Bridgeman, a Louisvillian known for his significant contributions to the community.

Kevin Shurn, owner of Superior Maintenance Co., reflected on Bridgeman’s impact, calling him an inspiration. He recalled meeting him on a flight many years ago. “I have his card to this day,” Shurn added.

Kentucky representative Pamela Stevenson praised Bridgeman for his determination and resilience, encouraging attendees to leave their mark on the world.

Eden Bridgeman represented her father at the gala, saying, “We are excited to step into his very big shoes, but also create our own path.”

Pop singer Janelle Monae captivated the audience as the headline performer, marking the first time a woman has headlined the event in its eight-year history. Pryor noted that this year’s fundraiser surpassed previous totals, exemplifying the community’s commitment to support the Urban League’s mission.
