PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) — The LPGA Tour will make its debut in Mexico this week with the inaugural Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. The tournament, held from May 21-24, is set to attract a star-studded field and will feature a total prize purse of $2.5 million.

Golf enthusiasts can expect to see prominent players like Charley Hull, a two-time LPGA Tour winner, aiming for her third title. Other notable competitors include Hye-Jin Choi, who has gained recognition with 12 victories on the LPGA of Korea Tour from 2017 to 2023.

The tournament marks the second of two new events introduced on the LPGA Tour this season, continuously expanding its reach in the world of women’s golf. The winner of the Mexico Riviera Maya Open will take home $375,000, with a minimum of six figures for those finishing in the top five.

Mexican golfers Gaby Lopez and Maria Fassi will be competing in their home country, adding local excitement to the event. Other top players participating include Linn Grant, Leona Maguire, and Carlota Ciganda.

The purse is equivalent to that of the recent Blue Bay LPGA tournament, generating widespread interest among players and fans alike. With 500 Race to the CME Globe points also up for grabs, this tournament promises to be a significant milestone for the LPGA Tour.
