Baton Rouge, LALSU fired head coach Brian Kelly on Sunday evening, marking a significant turning point after a disappointing 2025 football season. Kelly, who took over the program in 2022, leaves with a record of 34-14 but failed to meet the high expectations set for him.

The decision came after LSU’s recent 49-25 loss to Texas A&M, which dropped the Tigers to a 5-3 record this year and largely out of playoff contention. Athletic director Scott Woodward stated, “When Coach Kelly arrived at LSU four years ago, we had high hopes that he would lead us to multiple SEC and national championships… Ultimately, the success at the level that LSU demands simply did not materialize.”

Kelly’s tenure included a promising start with back-to-back double-digit win seasons in 2022 and 2023, but the team regressed significantly in 2024, finishing 9-4. Hopes were high entering 2025 after LSU signed the No. 1-ranked transfer portal class, but the offense struggled to perform. They averaged just 25.5 points per game, ranking last in the SEC in rushing yards.

Sources reveal that tension built within the coaching staff and the administration, as rumors circulated about potential changes after poor performances. Kelly had a contentious meeting with Woodward before the decision to let him go was finalized.

The former Notre Dame coach came under scrutiny for his inability to connect with the LSU fanbase and for moments of frustration during press conferences. Critics pointed to his hiring of staff and play calling decisions that failed to elevate the team.

As LSU looks to move forward, running backs coach Frank Wilson will serve as the interim head coach. A coaching search is underway with hopes for a quick turnaround to restore LSU to its championship-winning status, a target that remains vital for a program with such rich football history.

The pressures of the SEC and maintaining strong recruiting in Louisiana are essential for LSU’s next coach, who will need to navigate a challenging landscape for success.
