LSU Looks to Advance to College World Series Against West Virginia

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – LSU will face West Virginia in Game 2 of the NCAA Super Regional on Sunday, June 8, at 6:06 p.m. CT, after rain delayed the start time. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN2.
The Tigers lead the series 1-0, having secured a commanding 16-9 victory in Game 1. LSU showcased a powerful offense, highlighted by three home runs, including two grand slams from Steven Milam and Josh Pearson.
Freshman left fielder Derek Curiel starred in the opener, going 3-for-3 with five RBI and a three-run homer. Coach Jay Johnson praised his team, saying, “Great performance by Derek. Great performance by Josh. Really good job by our entire lineup throughout the game today.”
LSU’s 16 runs marked the highest total for the team this postseason and the most in a game since March. The team capitalized on 13 total walks and hit-by-pitches throughout the match.
Saturday’s win improved LSU’s season record to 47-15, while West Virginia dropped to 44-15. If LSU wins Game 2, it will advance to the College World Series for the 20th time in program history. Should West Virginia win, the teams will meet again on Monday for a decisive Game 3.
Noteworthy is that LSU’s left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson earned the win Saturday, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing seven runs, six earned. He faced heavy heat with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees.
Both teams are looking to seize momentum as West Virginia aims to keep its championship hopes alive. The Mountaineers will likely send sophomore righty Chase Meyer to the mound. Meyer entered as a relief pitcher after struggling starts contributed to their loss Saturday.
The stage is set for an exciting matchup, with a place in Omaha on the line. The teams are eager to give their best effort as the postseason wraps up.
