LSU and Texas Dominate in Women’s NCAA Tournament Opener

Baton Rouge, Louisiana — The Women’s NCAA Tournament kicked off with impressive performances from LSU and Texas on March 22, 2025, dominating their first-round matchups with significant victories.
LSU surged into the tournament with a decisive 103-48 win over San Diego State. Fueled by the return of star players Flau'jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow, the Tigers exhibited their offensive prowess, shooting 50% from the field and out-rebounding their opponents 53-31.
Johnson, who had missed the SEC Tournament due to shin inflammation, made an immediate impact, contributing 22 points, four steals, and two blocks. Morrow added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, marking her 28th of the season. LSU showcased their depth, as six players scored in double figures.
“We played a strong game on both sides of the ball,” said LSU coach Kim Mulkey. “The team came together, and it’s great to see Flau’jae back doing what she does best.”
Texas also delivered a commanding performance, defeating William & Mary 105-61. After a shaky start, the Longhorns found their rhythm in the second quarter, aided by Madison Booker, who led the team with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
“We had a slow start, but once we got settled, we executed our game plan well,” Booker said post-game. “Our offensive attack was much more fluid, and we capitalized on opportunities in the paint.”
In their matchup, Texas shot over 54% from the floor, with five players scoring at least nine points. They dominated the paint, outscoring William & Mary 56-22 in that area.
Elsewhere, South Dakota State pulled off an upset by beating Oklahoma State 74-68, marking the only double-digit seed to advance in the tournament. Other matches featured top teams like Maryland and North Carolina, both posting solid victories as the first round of the tournament unfolded.
