Lucas Giolito Returns with Strong Performance in Red Sox Victory

BOSTON, Mass. — Lucas Giolito made a successful return to the mound for the Boston Red Sox on Friday, giving fans hope after a challenging recovery period. Giolito, who missed the entirety of the 2024 season and part of the 2025 campaign, pitched 4 2/3 innings in a game against the Atlanta Braves.
In his outing, Giolito allowed just one earned run, striking out three batters, walking two, and surrendering five hits. Despite his solid performance, the veteran pitcher was removed from the game after throwing 85 pitches, which took many by surprise, including himself.
“I was surprised by the early pull,” Giolito said after the game, according to MassLive.com. Manager Alex Cora explained the decision, stating they preferred a matchup against Braves slugger Matt Olson, bringing in Justin Wilson to face him. “The way we’ve been playing, every matchup matters, especially around that time,” Cora noted. “Getting Olson out there was huge.”
Giolito reflected humorously on the decision, saying, “They don’t want me to give up a homer there. I don’t like it, but I’m an employee, so we do what we’re told.” His remarks display a blend of understanding and frustration.
This game marked Giolito’s second consecutive strong performance after he pitched seven scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles on May 24. Early in the season, he showcased some rust, a natural result of his long absence, but his recent outings suggest he is regaining his form.
As the Red Sox aim to capitalize on Giolito’s resurgence, the team’s confidence continues to grow, especially following their 5-1 victory over Atlanta.
