Lucas Paqueta Faces FA Charges Over Betting Allegations Linked to Phone Disposal
Lucas Paqueta, a prominent football player, is currently facing charges from the Football Association (FA) related to an investigation into betting activities surrounding his football matches. The case hinges on the disposal of an old mobile phone, which has incurred further allegations of non-cooperation against Paqueta.
According to reports from SunSport, the inquiry originally began over suspicious betting patterns involving Paqueta’s bookings in four matches played between November 2022 and August 2023. These matches include games against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Bournemouth.
The FA first received Paqueta’s device around a year ago for analysis of call logs, messages, and bank records. During that time, Paqueta acquired a new phone. When the FA returned the old handset, Paqueta, reportedly unaware of future requirements, disposed of it. This act has resulted in further charges of obstruction being brought forth in May, including two aggravated breaches based on non-cooperation.
Specifically, Lucas Paqueta is accused of betting associated misconduct during these four games. For instance, the first incident occurred during a match against Leicester, where he was booked after tackling Boubakary Soumare. Further bookings included fouls against Aston Villa and Leeds United, and handling the ball during a match against Bournemouth.
The allegations have broadened as the FA requested additional access to the same phone, which Paqueta could not provide due to its disposal. Despite the severity of the situation, including potential outcomes such as a lifetime ban from football, Paqueta maintains his innocence.
The 27-year-old Brazilian, currently playing for West Ham, is charged with breaches of FA Rule F3, which pertains to his mobile phone use. Although a resolution to this case is not anticipated until next summer, Paqueta is still able to participate in the ongoing football season.
Additional information surfaced about approximately 60 individuals in Brazil who placed bets on Paqueta being booked in the games mentioned, with some bets as low as £7. These bets allegedly resulted in collective winnings of approximately £100,000.
The FA has refrained from making any public comments regarding these developments. Nonetheless, the proceedings have reportedly impacted Paqueta’s performance this season. Despite these challenges, he managed to score during a league match, contributing to his team’s overall efforts.
Separately, a landmark court ruling involving Lassana Diarra has brought about discussions on transfer fee regulations, although this matter is unrelated to the ongoing situation with Paqueta.
