Luis Enrique Reflects on Daughter Xana Before Champions League Final

PARIS, France — As Luis Enrique prepares to lead Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, he carries the memory of his late daughter, Xana, who died of osteosarcoma at age nine. The match on Saturday marks a significant moment for Enrique, both personally and professionally.
Enrique recounts a vivid memory of Xana joyfully waving a large flag during a celebratory moment after FC Barcelona won the Champions League in 2015. Now, as he approaches another final, he reflects on the deep bond they shared, despite her tragic early passing in 2019.
‘My daughter came to live with us for nine wonderful years,’ Enrique said in a recent documentary. ‘We have a thousand memories of her.’ His words exude a sense of gratitude for the time they had together rather than bitterness for her loss.
During a fundraising dinner for Fundacion Xana, a charity set up in her honor, Enrique was surrounded by Xana’s friends and their families. He remained composed, emphasizing that every painful experience teaches important life lessons. ‘Those moments were very tough, but at the same time very moving,’ he stated.
As he steps onto the field for the final, Enrique aims to channel Xana’s spirit into his team’s performance, believing she will be with him in spirit. ‘I want to be able to plant a Paris Saint-Germain flag into the turf, just as I did with Barcelona,’ he said. ‘Her energy is still very much with us.’
Enrique’s journey reflects resilience, showcasing how personal loss can provide strength and motivation. As PSG faces Inter Milan, he intends to honor his daughter while pursuing victory.
