EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Luka Dončić admitted he was as stunned as the rest of the basketball world when the Dallas Mavericks traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster deal. The 25-year-old superstar, who won his first scoring title last season and led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, officially joined the Lakers on Tuesday, marking a seismic shift in the NBA landscape.

“It was a big shock,” Dončić said during his introductory press conference at the Lakers’ training facility. “It was hard moments for me. I had to check if it was April 1. … But now I get to play in the greatest club in the world, and I’m excited for this new journey.”

The Lakers acquired Dončić in a three-team trade that sent Anthony Davis and Max Christie to Dallas. Dončić, a five-time All-NBA selection, is widely regarded as one of the league’s brightest young stars. His move to Los Angeles pairs him with LeBron James, creating one of the most dynamic duos in NBA history.

“Honestly, it was hard at first,” Dončić said of the trade. “That first day was really hard. I felt like these last 48 hours was one month. Emotionally, it was really hard, but today was much better. I’m just very happy to be here for this opportunity. This is the Lakers. It’s one of the best clubs in history, so I’m excited to be here.”

Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition. “We have one of the game’s biggest superstars and an international player coming to join the Lakers,” Pelinka said. “I think it’s going to be something incredibly special that the NBA and basketball has never seen before.”

The trade has left many Mavericks fans disheartened, including Dončić’s father, Sasa, who criticized the move, saying his son “absolutely did not deserve this.” Dončić, who has been sidelined since Christmas with a calf strain, is nearing a return to the court. The Lakers have four games in the Los Angeles area over the next seven days, including a matchup against the Clippers on Tuesday night.

In addition to Dončić, the Lakers acquired Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris in the trade, bolstering their roster as they aim for another championship run. The move signals a new era for the Lakers, who are banking on Dončić’s talent to propel them back to the top of the NBA.
