Luka Garza Steps Up Again as Timberwolves Defeat Jazz
SALT LAKE CITY – Luka Garza delivered another standout performance for the Minnesota Timberwolves in their 112-108 victory over the Utah Jazz on Thursday night at the Delta Center. The backup center, who has become a reliable option in critical moments, scored 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 22 minutes of play.
Garza’s contributions were crucial after forward Julius Randle exited the game in the second quarter with right groin soreness. “I’ve made it my identity to always be ready,” Garza said postgame. “When my name is called, I’m prepared to step up.”
This marked the third consecutive season Garza has made a significant impact in Utah. Two seasons ago, he scored 25 points off the bench in a Wolves win. Last season, he helped secure two road victories in Utah when Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert were sidelined with injuries.
Garza credited his mindset to examples set by teammates Naz Reid and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. “I’ve seen guys like Naz and Nickeil take advantage of their opportunities,” he said. “It’s inspiring and motivating. I’m in that spot now where I can do the same.”
Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch praised Garza’s professionalism and readiness. “He’s one of my most favorite players I’ve ever coached,” Finch said. “Every time we put him in, he produces. Silly me, I probably should play him more.”
Garza’s journey from a training camp invite to a full NBA contract reflects his perseverance. “I feel like I fit perfectly into what Coach Finch is trying to do,” Garza said. “My teammates have so much confidence in me, and that keeps me going.”
The Timberwolves’ depth was on full display during their recent road trip, with Garza, Rob Dillingham, and Jaylen Clark all contributing to back-to-back wins in Phoenix and Utah. “We’re not going to be negative on the end of the bench,” Garza said. “We’re going to support our guys the way they support us.”
The Wolves (27-21) have now won five straight games, their longest streak of the season. They will face the Washington Wizards, who are 6-41 and on a 16-game losing streak, on Saturday at Target Center.
