Luke Kennard’s First Dunk in Five Years Sparks Grizzlies’ Celebration
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies bench erupted in celebration Wednesday night as Luke Kennard, a 6-foot-5 guard not typically known for his dunking, delivered a two-handed slam during the team’s 132-120 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. The dunk, Kennard’s first in five years, became an instant highlight and earned praise from teammates, including Ja Morant, who called it a “perfect 10.”
With 10:18 left in the fourth quarter, Kennard stole the ball and drove to the basket, finishing with authority. The play marked his first dunk since the 2019-20 season, a rare feat for the sharpshooting guard. Kennard, who is on a one-year, $9.25 million contract, flashed a wide smile as he glanced at the Grizzlies bench after the dunk.
“(Luke Kennard) should be in the 3-point contest. Stick to your strengths,” Morant joked after the game, referencing Kennard’s reputation as one of the league’s elite shooters. Despite the lighthearted comment, Morant rated the dunk a “perfect 10” and acknowledged the excitement it brought to the team.
Jaren Jackson Jr. also chimed in, giving Kennard’s dunk a perfect score of 50. “It was awesome,” Jackson said. “We all know what Luke can do, but seeing him dunk like that was special.”
Kennard, who finished the game with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 7-of-11 from 3-point range, was caught off guard during his postgame interview when reminded of the five-year gap between dunks. “I didn’t even realize it had been that long,” he said. “The crowd’s energy after the steal just made me want to go for it.”
The former Duke standout’s performance was a key factor in the Grizzlies’ victory, as he added four rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 26 minutes off the bench. His ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and contribute defensively has made him a valuable asset for Memphis this season.
Kennard’s dunk not only energized the team but also provided a memorable moment for fans at FedExForum. As the Grizzlies continue their push in the Western Conference, plays like this could serve as a catalyst for their success.
