Florida State Basketball Coach Luke Loucks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State University has appointed Luke Loucks, a two-time NBA champion and former player, as the new head coach for the men’s basketball team, it was announced on Sunday.

Loucks, who played for the Seminoles from 2008 to 2012 under outgoing coach Leonard Hamilton, signed a five-year contract. His return marks a significant transition for the program after Hamilton’s 23-year tenure. Athletic Director Michael Alford expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Luke will bring a unique combination of qualities to our program, and I’m excited to begin the next chapter of our basketball history under his leadership.”

Loucks, 34, brings extensive coaching experience, having served as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors. He is widely recognized for his player development skills. During his time with Golden State, he was instrumental in the team’s back-to-back NBA championships, working with stars like Kevin Durant and Steph Curry.

“I am incredibly honored and excited for the opportunity to become the head coach for the Florida State men’s basketball team,” Loucks said. “FSU has a rich basketball tradition, and I look forward to building on the legacy of our previous coaches, especially Coach Hamilton.”

Loucks highlighted the importance of creating a competitive culture, stating, “We will have a standard that we stick to on and off the court that will help build a championship-level culture. I am hungry for more success at Florida State.” His coaching philosophy emphasizes molding a cohesive unit comprised of players with professional aspirations.

His coaching journey began in 2016 with the Warriors and has included significant roles in various organizations, culminating in successes such as Sacramento’s best defensive performance in 20 years last season. Loucks coached the Nigerian National Team during the Tokyo Olympics and has gained a reputation for developing talent effectively.

Florida State President Richard McCullough welcomed Loucks back, declaring, “Luke’s exceptional coaching ability, profound leadership skills, and extensive basketball knowledge make him the perfect fit to lead our program.” He emphasized the family ties Loucks shares with the university and the importance of understanding the FSU basketball culture.

Loucks leads at a pivotal moment for the Seminoles, who last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2021. The program has faced challenges in recent years, making his leadership crucial to their revival. “Loucks understands what it means to be a Seminole and embodies our values,” said McCullough.

The announcement coincides with a farewell to Hamilton, who was honored for his contributions to the program and reached 200 wins in the ACC. The new chapter for FSU basketball under Loucks looks to rebuild and strive for the success achieved in the past.

The basketball community has responded positively to Loucks’ appointment, with fellow coaches commending his player development skills and deep understanding of the game. He is anticipated to create a dynamic environment that steers Florida State basketball back to national prominence.

With his commitment to fostering a strong team culture and connection to Florida State, Loucks is eager to commence what he calls a journey that feels “meant to be.” He will be officially introduced on Monday.
